Coatings - machine element clearance control

The efficiency of a machine which is driven by gas under pressure or one which transmits power by applying pressure to a as, depend on the ability of its seals to minimize ore prevent leakage of the gas. Many times the problems of sealing gas can be solved by establishing extremely close running clearances between mating elements of the machine. Manufacturing and assembling machinery with extremely close clearances is highly expensive.

Abradable coatings make it possible for the mating elements themselves to establish the necessary clearances automatically, at a fraction of the cost of previous used methods.
